The Friends is a member-based, volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the historic assets of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Volunteer opportunities come in several forms.
Work Sessions. The focal point of the Friends’ activities are six week-long work sessions conducted annually at different locations along the railroad. While the projects change from year-to-year, many of them are mult-year efforts. Others, such as painting and lettering historic rolling stock, are annual fixtures. For more information, visit the work sessions page.
Docent Program. The Friends maintains an active docent program, which includes conducting tours in the Chama yard, and staffing the passenger trains. For more information, visit the docent program page.
Colorado Springs Restoration Facility. The Friends maintains a restoration facility in Colorado Springs. The volunteers there maintain a blog describing their activities at friendsofthectsrrcos.blogspot.com. For information about the work undertaken at Colorado Springs, contact John Engs at
